Heat Sink Types We Build to Order

Every thermal problem has a structure that fits it. Below are the eight main custom heat sink families we manufacture as an OEM heat sink China factory; many finished products combine two or more of these constructions in a single CNC-machined assembly.

Extruded Profile Heat Sinks

Custom aluminum extrusion heat sinks in 6063-T5 with customer-defined fin pitch, fin height and base thickness. Extruded profiles are cut, CNC machined, drilled, tapped and surface treated to length — the most cost-effective custom aluminum heat sink for medium power loads and series volumes.

CNC Machined Heat Sinks

Solid-block heat sinks carved from aluminum or copper plate by 3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis CNC milling, allowing very fine fins, complex pockets, embedded channels, mixed fin zones and precise mounting datums that extrusion cannot achieve. Ideal for compact, high-performance custom heatsinks per drawing.

Skived Fin Heat Sinks

Skiving (shovel-tooth) machines peel ultra-thin continuous fins directly from an aluminum or copper base, reaching fin thickness down to roughly 0.1 mm with no interface resistance between fin and base. A preferred custom skived fin heat sink for high-fin-density forced-air cooling.

Bonded Fin Heat Sinks

Individual aluminum or copper fins are bonded into precisely machined base grooves with thermally conductive epoxy or low-temperature soldering. Bonded-fin construction supports tall fins, wide coolers and mixed fin orientations when an extrusion ratio would otherwise be impossible.

Folded / Swaged Fin Heat Sinks

Also called folded-fin, zipper-fin or inserted-fin (swaged) heat sinks: a corrugated fin pack is folded from thin aluminum or copper strip and locked, stacked or swaged into a machined base. Light weight, high aspect ratio and excellent air-side surface area per gram.

Die-Cast Heat Sinks

High-pressure aluminum or zinc alloy die casting integrates fins, bosses, mounting feet and housings in one near-net-shape part, followed by CNC finish machining of sealing and contact faces. Suitable for OEM die-cast heat sinks in stable, high-volume programs.

Heat Pipe Heat Sinks

Sintered or grooved copper heat pipes are embedded, soldered or pressed into CNC-machined bases and fin stacks to move heat rapidly to a remote dissipation area. Custom heat pipe heat sink assemblies can be shaped in 2D and 3D to fit restricted enclosures.

Liquid Cold Plates

Custom water cooling plates made by gun drilling, CNC-milled channel covers, brazing or friction stir welding (FSW) in aluminum or copper, with machined G-thread / NPT ports, O-ring grooves and leak-tested channels for IGBT, laser, battery and server liquid cooling loops.

Heat Sink Manufacturing Processes

Selecting the right forming process is what separates a thermally efficient heat sink from an expensive block of metal. Our engineers match each custom OEM heat sink to one process — or a controlled combination — based on power density, envelope, fin geometry, target unit cost and annual volume.

1CNC Precision Machining

3/4/5-axis CNC milling, CNC turning, drilling, tapping, counterboring, pocketing and face milling turn forged plate, extruded bar, casting or forged copper into finished custom machined heat sinks. CNC is used both as a stand-alone process for block heatsinks and as the finishing stage for every other process family.

2Aluminum Extrusion

Custom extrusion dies are opened from your profile drawing; 6063 and 6061 aluminum billets are pressed into continuous heat sink profiles, aged to T5/T6 temper, then cut to length and CNC finished. Low tooling cost and fast sampling make extruded heat sinks the volume workhorse of the industry.

3High-Pressure Die Casting

Molten aluminum alloy (such as A380 / ADC12) or zinc alloy is injected into a custom mold under pressure, producing complex integrated heat sink bodies with ribs, pins, feet and housing features in one shot; critical contact faces are then CNC machined to guarantee flatness.

4Fin Skiving

A precision skiving knife slices and folds fins out of the base material itself in one continuous pass, producing one-piece aluminum or copper skived fin heat sinks with extremely thin, gap-free fins — excellent for forced convection where bonded interfaces would add thermal resistance.

5Bonded-Fin Assembly

Fins are cut to exact height, inserted into grooves CNC-milled into the base, and fixed with high-thermal-conductivity bonding agent or vacuum soldering. Bonded fin heat sinks unlock fin heights and aspect ratios beyond extrusion limits and allow aluminum fins on copper bases.

6Folded / Inserted-Fin Assembly

Fin strip is folded into a continuous accordion pack and inserted, swaged, brazed or soldered between base plates or tubes. The process yields lightweight zipper-fin and stacked-fin cores for CPU coolers, radiator cores, heat pipe towers and forced-air custom heat sink modules.

Materials We Machine into Heat Sinks

Material choice sets the ceiling of thermal performance, weight and cost. We stock and machine the full range of standard heat sink alloys and can source customer-specified tempers, alloy grades and batch-traceable raw material for every production lot.

Aluminum 6063-T5

The classic extrusion heat sink alloy, with thermal conductivity around 200 W/(m·K), smooth anodizing response and high formability for thin extruded fins. Used for most custom extruded aluminum heat sinks and profiles.

Aluminum 6061-T6

Higher strength with conductivity around 167 W/(m·K), preferred for CNC-machined heat sink plates, structural cold plates, pressure-bearing liquid plates and parts requiring tapped holes and mechanical load.

Aluminum 6060 / 6005

Alternative extrusion alloys selected when slightly higher strength or a specific surface finish after anodizing is required for custom aluminum profile heat sinks used in lighting and architectural applications.

Aluminum 1060 / 1100

Near-pure aluminum with conductivity above 220 W/(m·K) and excellent ductility, commonly used for skived fins, folded fin stock and soft-aluminum cold plate covers where forming matters more than strength.

C11000 / C10100 Copper

Oxygen-free and ETP pure copper at roughly 390 W/(m·K) for custom copper heat sinks, copper cold plates, heat pipe evaporator bases and concentrated heat-source spreading where aluminum cannot keep junction temperatures low enough.

Brass C36000 & Copper Alloys

Free-machining brass and bronze alloys for CNC-turned fittings, threaded port inserts, standoffs and liquid cooling connectors integrated into custom heat sink and cold plate assemblies.

Aluminum–Copper Hybrid

Copper base or copper inlay paired with aluminum fins, bonded or soldered to combine copper's spreading power at the heat source with aluminum's light weight and large air-side fin area.

Steel & Special Alloys

Stainless steel mounting plates, spring clips, brackets and fasteners, plus specialty alloys on request, machined and finished alongside the thermal body so the complete assembly arrives ready to install.

Machining Precision and Surface Quality We Achieve

Because every heat sink starts as a machined part, thermal contact performance depends directly on mechanical precision. The figures below represent the routinely achievable capability of our CNC machining workshop for custom aluminum and copper heat sinks; tighter requirements can be reviewed drawing by drawing.

±0.01 mm
Dimensional tolerance on CNC-machined features, bores and datum faces
Ra 0.8–1.6
Routine surface roughness, with Ra 0.4 achievable on fine-finish contact faces
0.02 mm
Flatness and parallelism control on base contact surfaces for low thermal interface resistance
0.10 mm fin
Minimum skived fin thickness, with fin pitch and height machined to drawing

How Precision Protects Thermal Performance

The base contact face of a custom heat sink is where heat first crosses from component to metal. Warpage, tool marks or poor flatness force the thermal interface material to fill gaps, and every extra micrometer of gap raises junction temperature. We face-mill contact surfaces to controlled flatness and surface roughness so the heat sink mates evenly with IGBT modules, CPU heat spreaders, laser diodes or PCB copper pads.

Hole positions, thread depths, pin-fin arrays, O-ring grooves on liquid cold plates and heat-pipe press-fit bores are all machined to drawing-defined true-position tolerances, which keeps automated assembly smooth and prevents coolant leaks at sealing faces.

Surface Quality, Deburring and Cleanliness

Every custom machined heat sink leaves the milling or turning stage with controlled edge break: sharp burrs are removed by hand deburring, tumbling, brushing or vibratory finishing, and fin tips are inspected so they remain straight without dangerous sharp edges.

Cold plates and wetted parts undergo chip removal, ultrasonic cleaning and coolant-channel flushing before leak testing, while cosmetic surfaces can be specified as-machined, brushed, sandblasted, bead-blasted or polished before the final surface treatment is applied, giving a repeatable appearance across production lots.

Surface Treatments Available for Custom Heat Sinks

Surface treatment controls emissivity, corrosion resistance, electrical insulation or conductivity, cosmetic appearance and glare. The same OEM heat sink can be delivered with different finishes across programs — all applied after CNC machining and inspected before packing.

Clear / Natural Anodizing

Standard sulfuric-acid anodizing on 6061/6063 aluminum raises surface emissivity and protects against oxidation while keeping the natural silver look of a machined aluminum heat sink.

Black & Hard Anodizing

Black anodizing maximizes radiative heat dissipation and reduces glare for LED and optical products; hard anodizing adds a thicker, wear-resistant layer for cold plates and sliding interfaces.

Powder Coating

Durable polyester powder layers in matte black, RAL colors or customer-defined shades for outdoor telecom heat sinks, lighting heatsinks and visible consumer products, with controlled film thickness.

Chromate Conversion Coating

Thin conductive chemical conversion film on aluminum that preserves electrical grounding while providing corrosion protection, commonly requested for electronic enclosure-integrated heat sinks.

Sand & Bead Blasting

Uniform matte texture applied before anodizing to hide tool marks and deliver a high-end, fingerprint-resistant appearance on CNC-machined faces and visible extrusion surfaces.

Brushing, Polishing & Tumbling

Directional brushing, mirror polishing or vibratory tumbling for cosmetic aluminum and copper parts, combined with edge breaking so fin arrays and mounting flanges are smooth to handle.

Nickel / Tin / Zinc Plating

Electroless nickel or tin plating for custom copper heat sinks and cold plates to prevent copper oxidation and improve solderability; zinc or nickel plating for steel brackets and fasteners.

Electrophoresis & Marking

Electrophoretic black coating for thin, even coverage in dense fin gaps, plus silk-screen printing and laser engraving of part numbers, orientation marks and customer labels on request.

From Drawing or Sample to Finished Custom Heat Sink

We accept formal engineering drawings as well as physical samples. For sample-only projects, dimensions are reverse-engineered into editable drawings and confirmed with the customer before any tooling or machining begins.

1Drawing / Sample Review

Engineering reviews STEP, IGES, X_T, DWG, DXF or PDF files — or measures a supplied sample — and checks thermal geometry, wall thickness, fin ratio, thread specs and machinability before quoting.

2Process & Material Selection

The optimal route is selected among CNC machining, extrusion, die casting, skiving, bonded fin and folded fin, with aluminum or copper alloy, surface treatment and packaging defined per the application.

3Tooling & Prototyping

Extrusion dies, casting molds or machining fixtures are prepared, and prototype custom heat sinks are machined for fit checks, thermal verification and design iteration before volume release.

4First-Article Verification

First articles are fully inspected by CMM, projector and gauges against drawing dimensions; samples and measured records are shared for customer approval before series production starts.

5Batch & Series Production

Approved designs move into controlled batch production with fixed machining parameters, tooling, work instructions and in-process patrol inspection to keep lot-to-lot consistency.

6Finishing, Inspection & Packing

Deburring, surface treatment, final dimensional inspection, cleaning and protective packaging are completed before delivery; cold plates additionally receive pressure and leak testing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Heat Sinks

Practical answers engineering and procurement teams usually need when sourcing an OEM CNC machined heat sink from China.

Can you make a heat sink exactly to our drawing?

Yes. We manufacture strictly per customer-supplied 2D drawings and 3D models, holding the dimensions, tolerances, threads, surface roughness and surface treatment noted on the drawing; conflicting or unmanufacturable features are flagged during review rather than changed silently.

We only have a physical sample, no drawing — can you copy it?

Yes. The sample is measured by CMM and profile projector, reverse-engineered into a drawing and 3D model, and the reconstructed dimensions are confirmed with you before tooling or production, which is useful for legacy and discontinued heat sinks.

Which process fits a high-power-density device?

Dense skived or bonded fins, copper bases, embedded heat pipes and liquid cold plates handle progressively higher heat fluxes. We recommend a construction after reviewing power, airflow or coolant conditions, envelope and target temperature rise.

What is the minimum order quantity?

There is no hard MOQ for CNC-machined custom heat sinks: a single prototype is acceptable. Extruded and die-cast routes involve tooling, so they become economical at series volumes, while CNC and skiving routes suit low volumes.

Aluminum or copper — how do we choose?

Aluminum (6061/6063) is lighter, cheaper and easier to extrude and anodize for most air cooling; pure copper spreads heat roughly twice as effectively and suits concentrated sources and liquid plates. Hybrid copper-base plus aluminum-fin designs split the difference.

Can several processes be combined in one assembly?

Yes — for example a CNC-machined copper base, soldered heat pipes and an aluminum skived or folded fin stack, finished with black anodizing. Mixed-process assemblies are common in servers, telecom, EV power electronics and laser systems and are built and inspected as one part.
