Why 7075 Aluminum for Custom Machined Components

7075 is an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu series high strength aluminum alloy and a standard aerospace grade aluminum. In the 7075-T6 temper it typically reaches an ultimate tensile strength around 503–572 MPa and a yield strength around 435 MPa, at a density of roughly 2.81 g/cm³ — giving CNC machined 7075 aluminum parts a strength-to-weight ratio close to mild steel while remaining roughly one third of its weight. This combination is exactly why custom 7075 aluminum machining is preferred for loaded structures, wear-sensitive machinery parts, aerospace and defense components, and high-performance automotive and EV parts.

Material Characteristics

7075 offers very high static strength, good fatigue performance, high hardness (typically around 150 HB in T6 condition) and excellent stiffness for thin-walled, lightweight structures. Stress-relieved 7075-T651 plate stays dimensionally stable during and after custom 7075 aluminum fabrication, so large base plates, mounting plates, valve blocks and housings hold flatness without post-machining movement. Its natural corrosion resistance is lower than 6061, which is why anodizing, hard anodizing, chromate conversion coating or passivation are commonly specified as a final finish.

CNC Machinability of 7075

7075 machines freely with short, brittle chips and low cutting forces, which makes 7075 aluminum CNC machining well suited to high speed machining, heavy depths of cut and micro machining of fine features. Sharp polished tooling, high spindle speeds and proper coolant produce clean burr-free edges, fine wall finishes and thin ribs down to small section sizes. Heat Treatment Methods

  • T6: solution heat treatment followed by artificial aging — the default peak-strength temper for most 7075 machined parts.
  • T651 / T6511: solution treated and stress-relieved by controlled stretching before aging; preferred for machined plates and bars to minimize distortion.
  • T73: solution treated and over-aged to improve resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in thick aerospace sections.
  • O temper: fully annealed, soft condition used for severe forming before re-aging.
