What a Threaded Adapter Does

A threaded adapter joins two components that do not share the same connection — different thread forms (for example NPT to G/parallel), different sizes (1/2″ male down to M10×1 female), or different interface types (external thread on one end, internal thread on the other, with a hex, wrench flat, shoulder, or O-ring seat in between). Because these parts often sit at a pressure boundary or an alignment-critical joint, the details that decide whether they work are:

  • whether the thread class and pitch are correct, not just “close”;
  • concentricity between the two ends and the bore;
  • the sealing surface finish (face, chamfer, taper, or O-ring groove);
  • material grade and corrosion resistance for the actual medium;
  • burr-free internal passages that will not shed chips into a line.

Material test reports (mill certificates) are available with the order — tell us at the RFQ stage if you need EN 10204 3.1 certification, chemical composition, or heat-number traceability marked on the parts or the paperwork.

Thread Forms and Standards We Hold

We cut and single-point both internal and external threads on the CNC lathe, and verify them with the matching ring or plug gauge. Standards we routinely produce:

  • NPT / NPTF — tapered pipe threads, 1/16″ through 2″ typical; NPTF dry-seal on request
  • G / BSPP (parallel) and R / Rc / BSPT (tapered)

Adapter Configurations We Make

Most of our custom stainless steel threaded adapters fall into one of these patterns — combinations and fully custom geometries are normal:

Machining Capabilities and Tolerances

Parts are produced on CNC turning centers and turn-mill machines; secondary milling, cross-hole drilling, and hex forming are done in-house where the design requires.

  • Lengths up to 300 mm standard, longer on review
  • General working tolerance: ISO 2768-m / ±0.02–0.05 mm; precision bores and fits held to ±0.005 mm, tighter on agreement
  • Surface roughness from Ra 0.8 on sealing and bore surfaces; as-machined Ra 1.6–3.2 elsewhere
  • Concentricity and perpendicularity callouts followed as drawn; first-article CMM/vision inspection on critical parts
  • Internal/external deburring, controlled edge break, and chip-free threads as standard

Send the actual tolerance callouts on your drawing — we machine to your print rather than substituting a looser house standard. If a tolerance is not achievable as drawn, engineering will flag it at DFM review instead of “making it work” silently.

Surface Finish and Treatment

Stainless adapters are commonly supplied as-machined, with the following options:

  • Passivation (citric/nitric) to remove free iron and maximize corrosion resistance — recommended for 316/316L fluid and medical-adjacent parts
  • Electropolishing for a smooth, bright, easy-to-clean surface (food, pharma, sanitary-adjacent)
  • Bead / sand blasting for a uniform matte finish
  • Mirror or brush polishing for visible assemblies
  • Black oxide is generally not recommended on stainless for corrosion service; we will say so if your drawing calls for it in a wet environment.

Quality Control and Documentation

Every production lot runs through the same inspection loop:

  1. Incoming material verified against grade and heat number
  2. First-piece inspection signed off before the run continues
  3. In-process checks on critical dimensions and thread gauging
  4. Final random or 100% inspection per the agreed AQL / control plan
  5. Clean, deburr, and protect threads before packing

Thread gauging is done with actual GO / NO-GO ring and plug gauges — not by visual fit. On request we supply:

  • dimensional inspection report (first-article or per lot)
  • material / mill certificate EN 10204 3.1
  • RoHS / material composition declaration
  • special packaging, labeling, or part-marking (laser-etched part number, heat number, or logo)

Q: What is your minimum order quantity for a custom CNC-machined stainless steel threaded adapter? For CNC-turned parts there is no tooling investment, so MOQ can be as low as 1 piece for prototypes. Price per piece is lower at higher quantities because setup is spread across the lot.

Q: Which grade should I choose — 304 or 316? 304 covers ordinary indoor and dry-environment use. Choose 316/316L where the part sees salt, moisture, chemicals, chlorides, or repeated washdown. If you tell us the medium, pressure, and temperature, we will recommend a grade rather than selling the more expensive one by default.

Q: Can you machine NPT and BSPP on the same adapter? Yes — mixed-standard transition pieces (for example NPT male to G female, or metric male to NPT female) are a routine job. State the class and whether you need sealant-free dry-seal (NPTF).

Q: How do you guarantee the threads will mate with our existing parts? Internal threads are checked with GO/NO-GO plug gauges and external threads with ring gauges to the stated standard and class. On a first order we recommend a prototype fit-check against your mating component before the production run.

Q: Do you provide material certificates? Yes. EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates, composition declarations, and heat-number traceability are available — request them at RFQ so they are included with the shipment rather than reconstructed afterward.

Q: What file formats do you accept? PDF drawings plus STEP, IGES, X_T, DWG, or DXF models. A hand sketch with fully defined dimensions and tolerances is enough to start for simple adapters.
