6061 is one of the most widely specified heat-treatable aluminum alloys for machined mechanical parts. It belongs to the 6xxx series, in which magnesium and silicon form the Mg2Si strengthening phase. The alloy combines medium-high strength, low weight, good atmospheric corrosion resistance, excellent machinability and a very wide range of finishing options — the reasons it is a default choice for precision aluminum components in general engineering.
6061 is a wrought Al-Mg-Si alloy with nominal additions of roughly 1.0% magnesium and 0.6% silicon, plus controlled copper, chromium and iron content. Magnesium and silicon combine as Mg2Si precipitates that respond to solution heat treatment and artificial aging, so the same base material can be delivered in O, T4, T6 and T651 tempers with different strength levels and machining behavior. This well-documented chemistry makes 6061 aluminum alloy custom fabrication predictable from batch to batch.
In the peak-aged T6 condition, 6061 offers an ultimate tensile strength near 310 MPa, a yield strength near 276 MPa, elongation around 12% and Brinell hardness near 95 HB. Its density is about 2.70 g/cm³, roughly one third that of steel, with an elastic modulus near 68.9 GPa and thermal conductivity around 167 W/(m·K). These values make 6061 T6 alloy parts light, reasonably stiff and good at moving heat away — ideal for housings, heat-sink structures and moving parts that must reduce inertia.
6061 cuts freely with short, manageable chips, low cutting forces and limited work hardening. It tolerates high spindle speeds and aggressive feed rates on CNC lathes and machining centers, keeps clean edges on thin walls and deep pockets, and forms clean internal and external threads when tapped with suitable feeds and coolant. T6 and T651 tempers machine best: custom 6061 aluminum CNC milling parts and custom 6061 aluminum CNC turning parts from T6 stock hold size far more steadily than annealed O temper, which tends to deflect and gum on the cutting edge.
The reference state is 6061-T6: solution heat treated, quenched and artificially aged to peak strength. 6061-T651 adds controlled stretching after quenching to remove internal stress, and it is preferred for thick plates, fixture plates and high-tolerance 6061 aluminum CNC components that must remain flat after large amounts of material are removed. T4 is naturally aged and softer, while O is fully annealed for forming work. Choosing T6 or T651 before cutting reduces post-machining distortion and helps CNC machining 6061-T6 parts hold tight positional tolerances.
6061 shows good atmospheric corrosion resistance even without a coating and anodizes very evenly, which is why clear or colored anodized 6061 aluminum parts are common in outdoor equipment and electronics enclosures. It welds readily by TIG or MIG, with strength in the weld zone partly recovered through post-weld aging. Its low density directly reduces assembly weight on automation machine parts, robotic structures and vehicle brackets, and anodizing or chemical conversion can be added after machining for extra surface protection.
