Precision TC4 titanium machining, from drawing to finished part

TC4 is the most widely used alpha-beta titanium alloy, combining high specific strength, excellent corrosion resistance and good thermal stability. Our machining facility in China specialises in converting this difficult-to-cut material into dimensionally stable, repeatable components with fine surface quality.

We produce custom CNC machining TC4 titanium alloy parts in China using 3-axis, 4-axis and simultaneous 5-axis machining centres, CNC lathes with live tooling, Swiss-type screw machines and wire / sinker EDM cells. Every programme is generated from your 3D model or 2D drawing, and first-article dimensions are verified before the batch is released.

Typical parts include structural brackets, hydraulic housings, valve bodies, fasteners, shafts, gears, drone frames, robot joint components and medical instrument parts. We machine from solid bar, forged blanks and plate, and we support secondary operations such as thread rolling, passivation, anodising, bead blasting and precision grinding in cooperation with qualified local suppliers.

Whether you need five prototype pieces or five thousand production units, the same engineering team, tooling strategy and inspection discipline apply. Our goal is to become your long-term partner for custom CNC machining TC4 titanium alloy parts in China.

TC4 equivalent grades under international standards

TC4 is the Chinese designation for the classic Ti-6Al-4V alpha-beta titanium alloy. Around the world it is known by different commercial and standard names. The chemical composition and mechanical properties are essentially equivalent, although inspection clauses and product forms differ by standard.

Note: ELI (extra-low interstitial) variants such as TC4 ELI / Grade 23 are a separate grade with tighter oxygen, nitrogen and iron limits, typically used for surgical implants. The table above covers standard TC4 / Ti-6Al-4V only.

Machining processes we apply to TC4 titanium

Titanium is a poor heat conductor and chemically reactive at cutting temperature, so tool selection, spindle load, coolant strategy and chip evacuation are planned before a single tool touches the part. Our processes are tuned for TC4 and for consistent tool life.

3 / 4 / 5-axis milling
Simultaneous 5-axis contouring for complex aerospace brackets, impellers and structural fittings.
CNC turning with live tooling
Turn-mill centres produce shafts, sleeves and valve bodies in one clamping, reducing stacking error.
Swiss-type screw machining
Long, slender parts and small-diameter precision pins machined with guide-bush support.
Wire & sinker EDM
Tight internal corners, slots and cavities that are impractical to reach with rotating cutters.
Surface & cylindrical grinding
Final finishing to Ra 0.4 µm and sub-micron flatness / cylindricity on bearing and sealing surfaces.
Drilling, tapping & reaming
Rigid tapping and thread milling for blind holes, with coolant-through tooling to avoid chip welding.

Inspection and dimensional control

Titanium parts are often used in safety-critical assemblies, so every dimension that matters is verified. We combine in-process checks with final inspection and keep records available for every batch.

In-process inspection
Operators verify key dimensions at set-up and after the first piece of every tool change.
CMM coordinate measuring
Bridge-type CMM with touch-trigger probing for 3D geometry, position and profile tolerances.
Surface roughness testing
Portable and laboratory profilometers verify Ra / Rz values on sealing and bearing surfaces.
Hardness testing
Rockwell and Brinell hardness checks confirm heat-treatment condition and material consistency.
First article inspection
Full dimensional layout of the first piece against the drawing before the batch is released.
Material traceability
Every batch of TC4 stock carries a mill test report, and material identity is retained through production.

Frequently asked questions

What is TC4 titanium alloy?
TC4 is the Chinese designation for Ti-6Al-4V, an alpha-beta titanium alloy containing approximately 6 % aluminium and 4 % vanadium. It is the most widely used titanium grade because it offers an excellent balance of strength, ductility, corrosion resistance and heat treatability. It is equivalent to ASTM Grade 5, AMS Ti-6Al-4V, Russian VT6 and German 3.7164.
What tolerances can you hold on custom CNC machining TC4 titanium alloy parts in China?
Standard machining holds ±0.01 mm on general dimensions. On critical features such as bearing bores, sealing diameters and locating faces, we regularly hold ±0.005 mm with grinding or fine boring. Tighter tolerances are evaluated case by case based on part geometry, feature size and inspection method.
What is the minimum order quantity?
There is no rigid minimum. We accept one-off prototype parts, small batches of 5–50 pieces for validation, and production runs from several hundred to over ten thousand pieces. Pricing is structured to reflect set-up and tooling cost, so unit price decreases as batch volume increases.
What surface finishes and secondary operations are available?
Standard as-machined finish is Ra 1.6 µm. We can provide Ra 0.8 µm by fine machining and Ra 0.4 µm by grinding or polishing. Secondary operations include bead blasting, passivation, anodising (for colour and wear resistance), thread rolling, laser marking and precision grinding. All secondary work is coordinated with qualified local suppliers and inspected before shipment.
